The result: domestic phosphate producers are absorbing soaring input costs while U.S. policy continues to favor imported Moroccan phosphate over American supply. That threatens the jobs, vendors, contractors, and communities built around Florida’s phosphate industry — and it threatens national food security.

Florida’s Agricultural Industry Is in Crisis – Immediate Action Needed

Dear Representative,

I am writing as a concerned Floridian to urge your immediate attention to a crisis threatening our state’s economy, thousands of jobs, and our nation’s food security.

Florida’s agricultural industry is facing a catastrophic shortage of sulfur, a critical input required to produce the fertilizers that grow America’s food. The price of sulfur has skyrocketed from approximately $69 per long ton in early 2024 to over $1,000 today, an increase of more than 1,300% in just two years. Driven by global conflict and supply chain disruptions, this surge has forced domestic fertilizer producers to curtail production.

The consequences are real and immediate. Florida’s fertilizer industry supports over 13,000 jobs, $350 million in local salaries, and more than $5 billion in total economic impact. But the stakes extend far beyond our state. American farmers depend on Florida’s production to grow the food that feeds our nation.

I am asking you to engage with federal agencies and trade officials on the sulfur supply crisis, explore policy solutions to stabilize access to this critical input, and treat this as the national food security issue it is.
